About Ainay Abbey (Basilique Saint-Martin d'Ainay)
Lyon's oldest surviving church, a Romanesque basilica of remarkable purity in the Presqu'île, built around 1107, incorporating Roman columns from Lugdunum in its nave, a rare and beautiful gem.
The Basilique Saint-Martin d'Ainay, in the southern tip of Lyon's Presqu'île, is the oldest surviving religious building in Lyon and one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in the Rhône Valley. Founded as a monastery in the 10th century on the site of a Roman altar, the current basilica was largely built around 1107 and consecrated by Pope Pascal II, making it nearly a thousand years old. Its architecture is of extraordinary purity: a simple three-aisled nave with a crossing tower, decorated with minimal ornament in the Burgundian Romanesque tradition. The church's most extraordinary feature is the incorporation of four ancient Roman granite columns in the nave, each one brought from the ruins of Lugdunum, visible evidence of the physical continuity between the Roman city and the medieval Christian one that replaced it. The church was a dependency of the powerful Abbey of Cluny and served as the church of the Ainay quarter's tight-knit monastic community. It was declared a Historic Monument in 1844, one of the first buildings in France to receive this distinction, largely due to the advocacy of Prosper Mérimée.
Did you know? Four of the columns inside Ainay Basilica are genuine ancient Roman columns, originally from a Roman monument on the same site, they have been standing continuously since the 1st or 2nd century AD, first as part of a Roman building, then as part of a Romanesque church.
