About Fourvière Basilica

Lyon's hilltop Neo-Byzantine basilica, built in thanksgiving after 1870, its gold mosaics and sweeping panorama over the city earning it the nickname 'the hill that prays'.

The Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière, perched on the hill above Vieux-Lyon and visible from almost every part of the city, is Lyon's most recognisable landmark and one of the most unusual major churches in France. It was built between 1872 and 1896 in a freely inventive Neo-Byzantine style, as an act of thanksgiving by the city of Lyon following the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. Lyon had prayed to the Virgin Mary for protection during the war, and when the city was spared, the citizens resolved to build a great church in her honour on the hill overlooking the city. The architect was Pierre Bossan, and the result is an extraordinary confection of white limestone towers, Romanesque arches, and Byzantine mosaics that has divided architectural critics but enchanted the public ever since. The interior is famous for its gold mosaics, which cover virtually every surface and depict scenes from the life of the Virgin and from French history, glowing with extraordinary warmth in the candlelight. The panoramic terrace beside the basilica offers the finest view of Lyon: the entire city, both rivers, and the distant Alps on clear days.

Did you know? Lyon has two hills with contrasting nicknames: Fourvière is 'the hill that prays' and Croix-Rousse is 'the hill that works', a reference to its silk-weaving history.
