About Place Bellecour

The largest pedestrian square in Europe, with a bronze equestrian statue of Louis XIV at its centre, connecting the two rivers and serving as Lyon's main gathering point.

Place Bellecour is one of the largest public squares in Europe and the central landmark of Lyon's Presqu'île (peninsula) district. Measuring approximately 310 metres by 200 metres, the vast open space is entirely pedestrianised and dominated at its centre by a large bronze equestrian statue of Louis XIV, cast in 1713 by Martin Desjardins. The square was created in the 17th century on a space that had been used for markets and public gatherings for centuries, and it has been the main focal point of Lyon's public life ever since. The surrounding buildings are 18th-century facades in a consistent classical style, giving the square a harmonious architectural frame. At its north and south ends, the square offers views down the city's main arteries toward both rivers. Place Bellecour is the social hub of modern Lyon: on summer evenings its terraced cafés are crowded, street performers entertain, and on major occasions, Bastille Day, the December Festival of Lights, New Year's Eve, the entire square fills with people. The Christmas Ferris wheel erected here each December is one of Lyon's most beloved seasonal landmarks.

Did you know? Place Bellecour is one of the largest pedestrian squares in Europe, covering about 62,000 square metres, an area comparable to Moscow's Red Square or Venice's St Mark's Square.
