About Vianden Castle
One of the most impressive medieval castles in the Benelux, a magnificent fortress above the village of Vianden, 40 km north of Luxembourg City, beautifully restored to its 11th-13th century grandeur.
Vianden Castle is one of the most magnificent and best-preserved medieval castles in the Benelux region, dramatically sited on a rocky spur above the town of Vianden and the Our river valley, about 40 kilometres north of Luxembourg City. The castle dates primarily from the 11th to 14th centuries, when it served as the ancestral seat of the powerful House of Vianden. The massive fortress, featuring round towers, Romanesque chapels, a Gothic hall, and extensive fortification walls, fell into ruin over the 18th and 19th centuries but was comprehensively restored from the 1970s onward by the Friends of the Castle organisation and later the state of Luxembourg. Today the castle is one of Luxembourg's most visited tourist destinations, accessible by foot or by a cable car from the town below. The town of Vianden itself, with its medieval character and the Our river running through it, is one of the most picturesque destinations in the Benelux.
Did you know? Vianden Castle was once sold off and its building materials stripped, it was rescued and comprehensively restored from the 1970s onward to near its medieval state.
