About Luxembourg Old Town (UNESCO)
The UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic centre of Luxembourg, medieval streets, the Grand Ducal Palace, fortification towers, and the extraordinary cliff-top setting above the Alzette valley.
The historic city centre of Luxembourg, comprising the upper town (Ville Haute), the Bock promontory, and the system of fortifications including the Bock Casemates, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, recognised for the outstanding universal value of its historic fortifications and the unique urban landscape they create. The old town is compact and walkable, concentrated on the sandstone plateau above the river valleys, and contains the main institutions of the Luxembourgish state: the Grand Ducal Palace, the Chamber of Deputies, the National Museum, Notre-Dame Cathedral, and the great medieval network of streets and squares. The combination of the medieval upper town and its dramatic cliff-top setting above the river valleys, with the lower city of the Grund visible far below, creates an urban landscape of extraordinary character that has no true equivalent anywhere in northern Europe.
