About St. James's Park

The oldest Royal Park in London, offering iconic views of Buckingham Palace across the lake and a home to resident pelicans since 1664.

St. James's Park is the oldest of London's eight Royal Parks, with origins dating to the reign of Henry VIII. At just 23 hectares, it is also one of the smallest, yet it offers some of the most iconic views in London, the bridge across the lake provides a stunning vista toward Buckingham Palace in one direction and the towers of Whitehall in the other.

The park's lake is home to a variety of waterfowl, including a famous colony of pelicans. Pelicans have lived in the park since 1664, when the Russian ambassador presented them as a gift to Charles II. Today, the pelicans are fed fresh fish daily at 2:30 PM.

Surrounded by three palaces, Buckingham Palace, St. James's Palace, and the Palace of Westminster, the park sits at the ceremonial heart of London.
