About Piazza Sant'Oronzo

Lecce's main public square, home to a Roman amphitheatre, a Swabian column topped with the city's patron saint, and the distinctive octagonal Palazzo del Seggio.

Piazza Sant'Oronzo is the vibrant social heart of Lecce, the great public gathering space of the city that has been at the centre of urban life here for over two thousand years. The square's most striking feature is the partially excavated Roman amphitheatre at its centre, the remains of a first-century AD structure that could seat 25,000 spectators and is one of the largest in Roman Italy. The column in the corner of the square was built from the drums of one of the twin columns that marked the end of the Via Appia at Brindisi; that column had collapsed in 1528, and its remains were brought to Lecce and re-erected here between 1666 and 1686. Atop the column stands a statue of Saint Oronzo, the first bishop and patron saint of Lecce, who according to tradition was martyred under Nero. The surrounding streets are lined with cafes and restaurants, and in the evenings the square fills with the Leccese passeggiata.

The tall column in Piazza Sant'Oronzo is built from the drums of one of the twin columns that originally stood at the port of Brindisi marking the end of the Via Appia, that column had collapsed in 1528, and its remains were brought to Lecce, where the monument was erected between 1666 and 1686 with the statue of Saint Oronzo placed on top in 1684.
