About Piazza del Duomo
Lecce's great enclosed baroque square, one of the finest in Italy, surrounded by the Cathedral, the Bishop's Palace, and the Seminary, all faced in golden local limestone.
The Piazza del Duomo is the theatrical heart of Lecce, a semi-enclosed baroque square of extraordinary grandeur and coherence. Unlike most Italian cathedral squares, which open to the surrounding streets, this one is deliberately enclosed on three sides, creating the feeling of stepping into an outdoor room. The square is surrounded by the Cathedral of the Assumption (dating from 1659 in its current Baroque form), the Bishop's Palace, and the Seminary, all built in the golden pietra leccese limestone that gives the city its characteristic warm amber colour. The bell tower stands separate from the cathedral, and at 72 metres is the tallest structure in the old city. The square has only two entrances, so it captures the afternoon sunlight and holds it, and at sunset the golden limestone glows with spectacular intensity.
Did you know? The Piazza del Duomo has only two entrances, it was deliberately enclosed on three sides to create a sense of theatrical drama and to protect the square from the wind that sweeps across the flat Salento plain.
