About Alhambra Palace
The most visited monument in Spain, a UNESCO World Heritage Moorish palace of incomparable beauty, where the last Muslim rulers of al-Andalus created the finest Islamic architecture in the Western world.
The Alhambra is the greatest monument of Islamic civilisation in the Western world and the most visited building in Spain. Built by the Nasrid dynasty on a forested hill above Granada, principally between 1338 and 1390, it represents the absolute pinnacle of Moorish architectural achievement. The complex consists of three main areas: the Nasrid Palaces, the royal residential complex with its legendary courts of the Myrtles and the Lions, the Alcazaba military fortress at the western end, and the Generalife summer palace and gardens to the northeast. The combination of intricate plasterwork, geometric tile patterns, arabesque calligraphy, and ingeniously designed water systems creates an environment of extraordinary beauty. UNESCO inscribed the Alhambra in 1984. Daily visitor numbers are strictly limited; booking months in advance is essential.
Did you know? The Alhambra sells a maximum of 6,600 tickets per day for the Nasrid Palaces; on peak days these sell out months in advance, making it essential to book well ahead of any visit to Granada.
