About Sacromonte

Granada's flamenco heartland, a hillside of cave homes above the Albaicín, inhabited since medieval times by the gitano community who created the Zambra style of flamenco unique to Granada.

Sacromonte is the hillside neighbourhood above the Albaicín that has been inhabited by Granada's gitano (Romani) community since the early modern period. The neighbourhood is famous for its cave dwellings, homes built into the hillside with their rooms carved from the soft rock, whitewashed, and furnished, which have been inhabited continuously for centuries. Sacromonte is the birthplace of the zambra, a form of flamenco unique to Granada that developed in these cave dwellings and combines elements of Moorish and gitano musical traditions. Today the neighbourhood retains its character of cave homes and small flamenco caves, offering some of the most atmospheric flamenco experiences in Spain. The Abbey of Sacromonte, at the top of the hill, is one of the most important Christian sites in Granada.

Did you know? The zambra of Sacromonte is the only form of flamenco that developed entirely outside Andalusia's coastal regions, it emerged from the inland gitano community of Granada and has a distinct musical character unlike any other flamenco style.
