About St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art

The world's first museum dedicated to religion and its impact on people's lives, located beside Glasgow Cathedral and featuring a Zen Buddhist garden and artworks from all the world's major faiths.

The St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art is a unique cultural institution, the first museum in the world to be created specifically to explore religion and its role in the lives of people across all cultures and throughout history. Opened in 1993 in a purpose-built modern building beside Glasgow Cathedral, the museum presents objects, artworks, and interpretive exhibits relating to Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Sikhism, as well as indigenous spiritual traditions. A highlight of the collection is a display of original works by Salvador Dalí on long-term loan. The museum also features a beautiful Zen Buddhist garden, the first of its kind in Scotland, designed as a space for quiet reflection accessible to people of all faiths and none. As with all Glasgow's key museums, admission is free.

Did you know? The St Mungo Museum, opened in 1993, was the first museum in the world created specifically to explore religion and its role in human life, a concept that was considered radical and controversial when first proposed.
