About Glasgow School of Art – Mackintosh Building
Charles Rennie Mackintosh's 1909 masterpiece and one of the most celebrated works of Art Nouveau architecture in the world, devastated by fires in 2014 and 2018 and now subject to a major restoration.
The Mackintosh Building at Glasgow School of Art is widely considered the greatest work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Scotland's most celebrated architect and designer. Designed in 1896 and completed in two phases between 1897 and 1909, the building synthesizes Art Nouveau, Scottish vernacular, and Japanese influences into something entirely original. Its library wing, completed in 1909, was especially revered as one of the finest interior spaces in the world. Tragedy struck in May 2014 when a fire damaged part of the building, and a second, catastrophic fire in June 2018, while restoration work was underway, destroyed the library and much of the interior. A major restoration project is now underway, led by the Glasgow School of Art. The exterior still stands, and the building remains a pilgrimage site for architecture enthusiasts from around the world who come to honor Mackintosh's extraordinary legacy.
Did you know? Mackintosh designed the entire building, including the furniture, light fittings, door handles, and ironwork, as a single unified artistic vision, making it one of the most complete examples of total design in the world.
