About George Square

Glasgow's grand civic centrepiece, ringed by 12 statues of notable figures and dominated by the magnificent Glasgow City Chambers, the beating heart of public life in the city.

George Square is the principal civic square of Glasgow, named after King George III and developed from the late 18th century onward. It is surrounded by twelve statues of notable historical figures, including Sir Walter Scott on the central column, which was originally intended to support a statue of George III himself, but the king died before it was completed. The east side of the square is dominated by the magnificent Glasgow City Chambers, completed in 1888 and built in Italian Renaissance style at a cost that outraged Victorian taxpayers. The City Chambers' interior is one of the most lavish public buildings in Scotland, with marble staircases and an elaborately decorated council chamber. George Square serves as the venue for major public events, New Year celebrations, and the annual Christmas market, and functions as the symbolic heart of civic Glasgow.

Did you know? The central column in George Square was originally intended to support a statue of King George III, but he died before it was finished, and Sir Walter Scott got the spot instead in 1837.
