About Loggia dei Lanzi
A magnificent 14th-century open-air loggia in Piazza della Signoria displaying monumental Renaissance and ancient sculpture, including Cellini's Perseus with the Head of Medusa and Giambologna's Rape of the Sabine Women.
The Loggia dei Lanzi (also called the Loggia della Signoria or Loggia dell'Orcagna) is a large open-fronted arcade on the southern side of Piazza della Signoria, built between 1376 and 1382 during the late medieval period to serve as a meeting and ceremony space for the Florentine government. The name 'dei Lanzi' comes from the German Landsknecht mercenary soldiers ('Lanzichenecchi') who were garrisoned there in the 16th century.
The loggia was used by the Medici to display ancient Roman sculpture, creating in effect the first public sculpture gallery in Europe. The present collection includes Benvenuto Cellini's masterpiece Perseus with the Head of Medusa (1545–54), displayed here since its completion; Giambologna's Rape of the Sabine Women (1583), a virtuoso sculpture carved from a single marble block; the ancient Roman group of Menelaus with the Body of Patroclus; and several other significant works. The combination of the late Gothic architecture of the loggia with the Renaissance and ancient sculpture creates one of the most extraordinary outdoor sculpture exhibitions in the world.
Did you know? Cellini hid a secret self-portrait on the back of Perseus's helmet, a small head looking downward that is only visible from behind the statue. This kind of hidden signature was a way for Renaissance artists to mark their work without obviously violating the conventions of the commission.
