About Chiostro dello Scalzo
An intimate cloister with a complete cycle of grisaille frescoes by Andrea del Sarto, depicting the life of John the Baptist, one of the finest Renaissance fresco cycles in Florence, rarely visited.
The Chiostro dello Scalzo is a small early 16th-century cloister belonging to the Confraternity of St John the Baptist (called 'dello Scalzo', 'of the barefoot', because the cross-bearer in their processions went barefoot). It contains one of the finest and least-known fresco cycles in Florence: sixteen scenes depicting the life of John the Baptist and allegorical figures of the Virtues, all painted in grisaille (monochrome grey) by Andrea del Sarto between 1511 and 1526.
Andrea del Sarto was the greatest Florentine painter of his generation, known to his contemporaries as 'the faultless painter' (pittore senza errori). These frescoes demonstrate his extraordinary command of the human figure, his mastery of tone and chiaroscuro, and his ability to convey complex narrative in a confined space. The grisaille technique, imitating sculpture in paint, gives the cycle a particular unity and solemnity. The cloister is small, rarely crowded, and offers an unusually intimate encounter with one of the finest artists of the High Renaissance.
Did you know? Andrea del Sarto worked on this cycle intermittently for 15 years (1511–1526), during which time Florence was invaded by the French, the Medici fell and returned to power, and the city underwent fundamental political transformation, all of which he witnessed from this quiet cloister.
