About German Hygiene Museum
A unique museum exploring the human body, health, and medicine, famous for its iconic transparent woman figure and exhibitions on the science of what makes us human.
The German Hygiene Museum (Deutsches Hygiene-Museum) is one of Dresden's most unusual and intellectually stimulating cultural institutions, devoted to the exploration of the human body, health, nutrition, sensory experience, and what it means to be human. Founded in 1912 by the Dresden industrialist Karl August Lingner, inventor of Odol mouthwash, the museum opened in its current striking Modernist building on Lingnerplatz in 1930. The museum's most famous exhibit is the 'Transparent Woman' (Gläserne Frau), a full human-size figure of lucite with visible skeleton, organs, and circulatory system, first created in 1930 and updated several times since. The museum hosts a constantly changing programme of major special exhibitions on topics ranging from sugar and salt to pleasure, gender, and ageing, all approached from a rigorously scientific but highly accessible and visually inventive perspective. It also contains a comprehensive permanent collection on the history of the body and medicine.
Did you know? The museum's iconic 'Transparent Woman' (Gläserne Frau), a full-scale lucite human figure with visible organs, was first created in 1930 and was exhibited at the 1933 Chicago World's Fair, inspiring copies worldwide.
