About Nano Nagle Place
A beautifully restored heritage centre honouring Nano Nagle (1718–1784), the Cork philanthropist and educator who founded the Presentation Sisters and secretly educated Cork's poor children.
Nano Nagle Place is a beautifully restored heritage complex on Douglas Street in Cork's historic south side, dedicated to the life and legacy of Honora 'Nano' Nagle, one of the most remarkable women in Irish history. Born into a wealthy Catholic family in 1718, Nagle was educated in France before returning to Cork and devoting herself to the education of the city's poorest children at a time when the Penal Laws made Catholic education illegal. She established a network of hedge schools across Cork, personally teaching hundreds of children. In 1775 she founded a religious congregation that would become the Presentation Sisters, an international organisation that today operates schools and social services in over 40 countries. The heritage centre includes her restored convent, a chapel, extensive gardens, a museum, a café, and an award-winning contemporary visitor experience that tells her extraordinary story.
Did you know? Nano Nagle operated her first secret school in 1754 in defiance of Penal Laws, she personally taught hundreds of children and was known as 'the lady with the lantern' for her nightly rounds.
