About Blarney Castle

A magnificent 15th-century tower house where kissing the legendary Blarney Stone is said to grant the gift of eloquence, surrounded by magical gardens including a famous Poison Garden.

Blarney Castle is one of Ireland's most visited heritage sites, a magnificent 15th-century tower house set in extensive grounds just 8km north of Cork city. The castle was built around 1446 by the MacCarthy clan and is one of the finest surviving examples of an Irish tower house. Its worldwide fame rests on the Blarney Stone, a block of limestone set into the battlements near the top of the tower. According to tradition, anyone who kisses the stone will be blessed with the gift of eloquence, the ability to speak sweetly, persuasively, and charmingly. Millions of visitors from around the world have made this pilgrimage, hanging upside down over the battlements to press their lips to the legendary stone. Beyond the castle, the 65-acre grounds contain extraordinary gardens including the Poison Garden, Rock Close (an ancient druidic garden of megalithic features), and a Woodland Walk.

Did you know? Over one million people visit Blarney Castle each year specifically to kiss the Blarney Stone, previous kissers have included Sir Winston Churchill, Mick Jagger, and countless world leaders.
