About Puerta de Almodóvar
The finest surviving gate in Córdoba's Moorish city walls, a 14th-century horseshoe-arched gateway flanked by Roman columns, marking the western entrance to the Judería and guarded by a statue of Seneca, whose birth city this was.
The Puerta de Almodóvar is the western gate in Córdoba's old Moorish city walls, a 14th-century gateway incorporating older Roman masonry. The gate is a single pointed horseshoe arch flanked by two ancient Roman columns, set within a larger defensive structure of towers and walls. It marks the western entrance to the historic Jewish quarter and is one of the most photographed sights in Córdoba. Just outside the gate stands a bronze statue of Seneca the Younger, who was born in Córdoba around 4 BC. The gate's name derives from the town of Almodóvar del Río upstream, the road through this gate led to that town and then to the rest of Andalusia.
Did you know? Seneca the Younger was not only a philosopher but also one of the wealthiest men in Rome, having accumulated a fortune estimated at 300 million sestertii through moneylending and investment. His ownership of large agricultural estates in Spain, Britain, and elsewhere made him a significant figure in the Roman economy as well as Roman philosophy.
