About Bell Tower of the Mezquita

The 54-metre tower that was once the Mezquita's minaret, built in 951 AD by Abd al-Rahman III, converted to a bell tower in the 16th century, reinforced by Baroque cladding after earthquake damage, and still climbed today for the finest panoramic views over Córdoba.

The Bell Tower of the Mezquita, the former minaret of the Great Mosque, stands at the north end of the mosque complex, rising to 54 metres. It was built in 951 AD by Abd al-Rahman III as the minaret from which the muezzin called the faithful to prayer. After the Christian reconquest of Córdoba in 1236, it was converted into a bell tower. In the 16th and 17th centuries it was encased in a Baroque exterior shell to stabilise it after earthquake damage, giving it its current appearance of a baroque tower hiding a Moorish minaret within. The tower can be climbed (tickets separate from the Mezquita), and offers the best panoramic views over Córdoba's historic centre.

Did you know? The original minaret of the Mezquita, built by Abd al-Rahman III in 951, was reportedly so tall and so prominent that it was used as a navigational reference point by ships sailing up the Guadalquivir River toward Córdoba, serving as a lighthouse for river traffic at a time when the river was navigable all the way to the city.
