About Via Etnea

Catania's magnificent Baroque main street, three kilometres of lava-stone paving and palaces running perfectly straight toward Etna, visible at every intersection.

Via Etnea is Catania's principal street and one of the most dramatic urban axes in Sicily: a straight boulevard three kilometres long, running north from Piazza del Duomo directly toward Mount Etna, paved in the black basalt lava stone that is the characteristic building material of the city. At every major intersection, looking north, Etna is visible at the end of the street, a framing of a living volcano within an urban perspective that is unique in the world. Via Etnea was laid out as part of the Baroque rebuilding of Catania after the 1693 earthquake by the architect Giovanni Battista Vaccarini, who used the opportunity of the total destruction of the city to impose a rational new street grid. The street is lined with the finest Baroque palaces and churches of the city, interspersed with fashionable cafés and gelaterie, and the evening passeggiata along Via Etnea, with Etna glowing in the distance, is one of the great experiences of Catanian life.

Did you know? Via Etnea was deliberately aligned toward Etna during the post-1693 rebuilding, every intersection offers a framed view of the active volcano, unique among the world's great urban streets.
