About Mount Etna
Europe's highest active volcano at 3,357m, dominating the Sicilian skyline, accessible by cable car and guided trek, and continuously erupting in spectacular displays.
Mount Etna is the dominant presence in the lives of the Catanesi, a volcano so consistently active, so physically overwhelming at 3,357 metres above sea level, and so historically significant that it is impossible to understand Catania without understanding Etna. It is the highest active volcano in Europe and one of the most continuously active volcanoes in the world, erupting in some form virtually every year. The UNESCO World Heritage Site designation of 2013 recognised both its exceptional geological significance and the extraordinary diversity of its ecosystem, the mountain supports habitats from Mediterranean scrub at the base to alpine desert near the summit. Visitors can reach the main cable car station (Piano Provenzana on the north side, Rifugio Sapienza on the south side) and take guided treks to the summit craters. The lava flows visible on the flanks of the mountain, some from historical eruptions, some from recent ones, give Etna a lunar, otherworldly quality.
Did you know? Etna's eruption of 1669 sent a lava flow directly into Catania, destroying a large portion of the city; 24 years later the 1693 earthquake (linked to the same volcanic stress) destroyed what remained.
