About Peneda-Gerês National Park

The only national park in Portugal, 55 km north of Braga, a dramatic wilderness of granite mountains, ancient oak forests, waterfalls, wolves, and wild Garrano horses, one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in the Iberian Peninsula.

Peneda-Gerês National Park, Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês, is the only national park in Portugal and one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in the Iberian Peninsula. Established in 1971 and covering approximately 703 square kilometres, it spans the mountainous border region between Portugal and Galicia in northwest Spain. The park encompasses four mountain ranges, Serra do Gerês, Serra da Peneda, Serra do Soajo, and Serra Amarela, rising to peaks above 1,500 metres. Ancient oak and birch forests cover the lower slopes; granite rock formations, glacial lakes, and waterfalls characterise the higher terrain. The park is home to wolves, wild boar, golden eagles, and the endangered Garrano, a small breed of wild horse unique to this region that has lived in the mountains since prehistoric times. Roman roads, medieval villages, and traditional stone granaries (espigueiros) add historical depth to the natural landscape.

Did you know? Peneda-Gerês is home to the Garrano, a small, prehistoric breed of wild horse that has lived in these mountains since before recorded history, genetically distinct from all other horse breeds and considered a living relic of the wild horses that roamed the Iberian Peninsula in prehistoric times.
