About Palácio do Raio

Braga's most flamboyant baroque palace, the Casa do Major Rolão (1754), with a breathtaking asymmetric rococo facade entirely covered in vivid blue-and-white azulejo tiles, designed by André Soares, the master of Braga's distinctive baroque style.

The Palácio do Raio, officially the Casa do Major Rolão, is the most visually extraordinary baroque building in Braga and one of the most remarkable domestic baroque buildings in all of Portugal. It was built around 1754 and designed by André Soares, the greatest baroque architect working in Braga in the 18th century. The building is famous above all for its extraordinary facade: an asymmetric composition of baroque windows, pilasters, and cornices, entirely clad in vivid blue-and-white azulejo tiles in a swirling rococo pattern. The effect is dramatic and unique, there is no other building quite like it in Portugal. The asymmetry of the facade (the windows do not line up, the cornices are at different heights) is a deliberate rococo device, emphasising movement and visual complexity over classical regularity. The palace is now a municipal building and can be viewed from the exterior; guided tours of the interior are sometimes available.

Did you know? The Palácio do Raio has one of the most complex azulejo tile facades ever applied to a domestic building in Portugal, the entire exterior surface, including window surrounds, cornices, and wall panels, is covered in a continuous swirling rococo pattern of blue-and-white tiles, making it one of the most photographed buildings in northern Portugal.
