About Mercado de la Ribera
Europe's largest covered market, a stunning 1929 Art Deco building on the Nervión riverfront, filled with fresh fish, produce, and pintxo bars.
The Mercado de la Ribera was inaugurated in 1929 and has been the culinary soul of Bilbao ever since. Designed by Pedro Ispizua in the Art Deco style, the building's three-storey riverside facade features some of the finest stained glass in the Basque Country, depicting the city's seafaring and trading heritage. With over 60 market stalls spread across 10,000 square metres on three floors, it is officially recognised by the Guinness World Records as Europe's largest covered market. The ground floor is dedicated to fish and seafood, the catch from the Cantabrian Sea arrives daily, while upper floors host vegetables, meats, cheeses, and traditional pintxo bars. The market underwent a careful renovation in 2010 that preserved its Art Deco splendour while modernising facilities. It remains a living institution where Bilbao residents do their daily shopping.
Did you know? The Mercado de la Ribera holds the Guinness World Record as the largest covered food market in Europe, with over 10,000 m².
