The Bilbao Fine Arts Museum (Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao) is one of the most important art museums in Spain, often overshadowed by its neighbour the Guggenheim but containing a collection of extraordinary depth and quality. Founded in 1908, the museum holds over 10,000 works spanning 700 years of art history. The collection is particularly strong in Basque artists, Regoyos, Zuloaga, and Iturrino, and in Spanish masters including El Greco, Zurbarán, Murillo, and Goya. International highlights include works by Gauguin, Van Dyck, Cranach the Elder, and Rubens. The museum also has an outstanding collection of contemporary art. Set in the elegant Doña Casilda Park, the building itself was extended with a modern wing in 2001. Admission is free on Wednesdays, making it enormously popular with Bilbao residents.
