About Reichstag Building

Germany's working parliament, crowned by Norman Foster's iconic glass dome of 1999, offering free panoramic rooftop views and a spiralling walk through 130 years of tumultuous German history.

The Reichstag Building has served as the seat of the German parliament since 1894. Designed by Paul Wallot in a neo-Renaissance style, it bears the famous inscription 'Dem Deutschen Volke' (To the German People). The Reichstag fire of February 1933 gave Hitler the pretext to suspend civil liberties and seize dictatorial power. Allied bombing and the Soviet assault left it a shell by 1945, and Soviet soldiers' graffiti remains preserved inside today. In 1995, artist Christo famously wrapped the entire building in silvery fabric. British architect Norman Foster then restored it, adding his glass dome with a central mirrored funnel that channels natural light into the debating chamber below. The dome is open to pre-booked visitors free of charge and its spiralling ramps offer panoramic views alongside an exhibition of parliamentary history and the preserved Soviet soldiers' inscriptions, one of the most moving and thought-provoking visits in Berlin.

Did you know? The 1933 Reichstag fire gave Hitler the pretext to suspend civil liberties, most historians believe the Nazis set or encouraged it.
