About Rione Aia Piccola
The quieter, more residential trulli district across the valley from Rione Monti, still inhabited by local families, less commercialised, and offering a more authentic glimpse of daily life in a trullo community.
The Rione Aia Piccola is the second UNESCO-protected trulli district of Alberobello, located across the small valley from the larger and more visited Rione Monti. While the Rione Monti has been extensively commercialised, most of its trulli now serve as tourist shops, restaurants, or holiday accommodation, the Aia Piccola remains primarily a residential neighbourhood. The 400 or so trulli of this district are mostly still in use as private homes, and the area has the quiet, lived-in atmosphere of a real community rather than a tourist attraction. The streets of the Aia Piccola are narrower and less trodden, the trulli are less aggressively maintained for visitor appeal, and the occasional washing line, parked car, or garden vegetable plot reminds you that real people live here. For the visitor who wants to understand what trullo life actually means as a way of living, rather than as an aesthetic spectacle, the Aia Piccola is the essential complement to the Monti.
Did you know? Unlike the Rione Monti, which has been almost entirely converted to tourist use, the Aia Piccola remains a living neighbourhood, many of its trulli have been continuously inhabited by the same families for generations, making it one of the few places where the trullo continues to function as intended.
