About Old Town (Ciudad Vieja)

The medieval heart of A Coruña, a compact peninsula of narrow stone streets with Romanesque churches, atmospheric plazas, and the remains of the old city walls, where modern bars and restaurants mix with centuries-old stone buildings.

The Ciudad Vieja, the Old Town, occupies the northern tip of A Coruña's peninsula, a compact area of narrow streets and stone buildings that preserves much of the character of medieval Galician urban life. Its two Romanesque churches, the Colegiata de Santa María del Campo (12th century) and the Church of Santiago de Compostela (12th century), are the oldest surviving buildings in the city. The Old Town also contains the ruins of the old city walls, parts of which can still be seen incorporated into later buildings, and the network of small plazas, Plaza de Azcárraga, Plaza de Santa Bárbara, that give the quarter its particular atmosphere. The Ciudad Vieja transitions seamlessly into the Pescadería (the fishing quarter) and the waterfront, and its bars and restaurants, specialising in Galician seafood, pulpo a la gallega, empanadas, and local Albariño wine, are among the best in the city. The area is also significant for its role as a starting point of the Camino Inglés to Santiago de Compostela.

Did you know? The Camino Inglés, the English Way of St James, begins (or ends) in A Coruña, having been used by medieval pilgrims from Britain and Ireland who arrived by sea to avoid the overland journey through France. Ships landed at A Coruña, and pilgrims walked the 75 kilometres to Santiago de Compostela.
