About Castle of San Antón
A 16th-century island fortress in the harbour of A Coruña, now home to the Provincial Archaeological Museum with Galician prehistoric and Celtic finds, accessible via a causeway and offering dramatic views of the bay.
The Castle of San Antón stands on a small island in the inner harbour of A Coruña, connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. Built in the 16th century as part of the defensive system of the port (A Coruña was one of the most important Atlantic ports in the Spanish Empire), it was later used as a prison, most notoriously under the Franco regime, when political prisoners were held here. Today it houses the Museo Arqueológico Provincial de A Coruña, which contains an important collection of Galician prehistoric and Celtic artefacts, including remains from the castros (Iron Age hillforts) of Galicia, gold jewellery and votive objects, and Gallo-Roman finds from across the region. The castle itself is of considerable architectural interest, with its star-shaped defensive bastions typical of 16th-century military engineering, and the views from its battlements across the harbour and city are among the finest in A Coruña. Construction of the fortress began in 1587 and was largely completed around 1590, its building was in fact accelerated by Francis Drake's 1589 attack on A Coruña, the assault during which the local heroine María Pita distinguished herself by killing the English standard-bearer who had planted his flag on the city walls.
Did you know? During Francis Drake's attack on A Coruña in 1589, local washerwoman María Pita rallied the city's defenders after her husband was killed, personally killing the English standard-bearer who had planted his flag on the walls, she became the heroine of A Coruña and gives her name to the city's main square.
