About Rapperswil (Day Trip)

The charming "Rose City" at the far end of Lake Zurich, a medieval castle, 15,000 roses in bloom, and a magical 50-minute boat ride from the city.

Rapperswil, the "Rose City," sits at the southeastern end of Lake Zurich, about 40 kilometres from Zurich city centre. It is one of the most rewarding day trips from the city, combining a well-preserved medieval old town, a stunning hilltop castle, and the famous rose gardens that give the town its nickname. The town's history stretches back to the 13th century, when the castle was built by the Counts of Rapperswil to command the narrowest crossing point of Lake Zurich. Today, the castle is home to a Polish museum and offers panoramic views over the lake. The rose garden below the castle contains over 15,000 rose plants in more than 600 varieties, blooming spectacularly from May to October. The historic causeway and wooden bridge connecting Rapperswil to the opposite shore at Hurden is the longest wooden bridge in Switzerland. The boat journey from Zurich to Rapperswil, operated by the Lake Zurich Navigation Company, takes about 50 minutes on the direct service and passes through some of the most beautiful Alpine lake scenery in Switzerland.

Did you know? Rapperswil's rose garden contains over 15,000 rose plants in 600+ varieties, earning the town its nickname "the Rose City" of Switzerland.
