About St Mark's Basilica
The crown jewel of Venice, a Byzantine masterpiece begun in 828 AD to house the relics of St Mark, lavished with golden mosaics covering 8,000 square metres of vaulted ceiling.
St Mark's Basilica stands at the eastern end of Piazza San Marco as the supreme expression of Venetian Byzantine art. Construction began in 828 AD when Venetian merchants smuggled the relics of St Mark the Evangelist out of Alexandria, Egypt, concealing them beneath layers of pork and cabbage to outwit Muslim customs officials. The current building, the third on this site, was consecrated in 1094 and expanded over subsequent centuries.
The five-domed exterior, modelled on the Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople, is encrusted with marble columns, bas-reliefs, and ancient stonework looted from across the Byzantine world. The interior glitters with 8,000 square metres of gold-ground mosaics depicting Old and New Testament scenes, earning the church the medieval nickname La Chiesa d'Oro, the Golden Church.
Above the central portal stand the famous four Bronze Horses of St Mark, classical masterpieces believed to have once adorned the Hippodrome of Constantinople before being brought to Venice in 1204. The originals are now kept inside; the horses on the facade are replicas.
