About Lido di Venezia
The Lido is the long barrier island that separates the Venice Lagoon from the Adriatic Sea, a beach resort with Art Deco hotels, the famous Hotel Excelsior, and the home of the Venice Film Festival, held each September since 1932 at the Palazzo del Cinema.
The Lido di Venezia is a long, narrow barrier island, about 12 kilometres long and only a few hundred metres wide, that separates the Venice Lagoon from the Adriatic Sea. It is connected to historic Venice by regular vaporetto services and takes about 20 minutes to reach.
The Lido developed as one of the great European beach resorts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Thomas Mann set his novella Death in Venice (1912) here, the brooding, declining author Aschenbach dies on the beach watching the beautiful boy Tadzio. Diaghilev, Nijinsky, Proust, and countless aristocrats and artists spent seasons on the Lido in its grand hotels. The most famous is the Hotel Excelsior, built in 1908 in a Moorish-Venetian style, with striped beach cabanas descending to the sand.
The Venice Film Festival (Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica) has been held on the Lido since 1932, making it the oldest film festival in the world. The Palazzo del Cinema on Lungomare Marconi is the main venue; the top prize is the Golden Lion.
Did you know? The Venice Film Festival (Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica), founded in 1932, is the world's oldest film festival, 14 years older than Cannes (1946). Its top prize, the Golden Lion, has been awarded to masterpieces including Rashomon, Birdman, and Roma.
