About Shroud Exhibition & San Giovanni Cathedral

Turin's Renaissance cathedral, the only one in Italy with a facade of white marble, houses the permanent exhibition on the Holy Shroud's history, carbon dating controversy, and scientific research.

The Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista, Turin's principal cathedral, is a beautiful late-fifteenth century building, the only Renaissance cathedral in Italy with a white marble facade. Begun in 1491 to a design by Meo del Caprino, it occupies the site of three earlier churches on the north side of Piazza Castello. The interior is elegant and harmonious, with Baroque side chapels and a beautifully proportioned nave. Attached to the cathedral is the Holy Shroud Chapel by Guarini, accessible through a connecting door. The cathedral also houses the Cappella della Sindone permanent exhibition, a comprehensive and thoughtful display on the history of the Holy Shroud, its journey from first-century Jerusalem (if that is where it began) through its documented history in France and Piedmont, the 1988 carbon dating controversy, the scientific debates, and the faith dimension. The exhibition is admirably balanced between scientific scepticism and religious belief, presenting evidence from multiple perspectives without imposing a conclusion. This is one of the best-presented museum exhibitions in Turin, and essential background for understanding the Shroud's extraordinary cultural significance.

Did you know? The Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista was designed by Meo del Caprino, a native of Florence, making this a rare case of a Florentine Renaissance master being hired to build the principal church of a rival city-state.
