About Mole Antonelliana & National Cinema Museum
Turin's iconic 167-metre dome tower, once the world's tallest masonry building, now houses Italy's first national cinema museum with a glass panoramic lift to the top.
The Mole Antonelliana is Turin's most recognisable symbol, its distinctive spired silhouette appearing on every postcard and at every turn of the city skyline. The tower was designed by Alessandro Antonelli and began construction in 1863 as a synagogue for Turin's Jewish community. But the project escalated wildly, Antonelli, seized by architectural ambition, kept adding height until the building reached 167 metres, making it the tallest masonry structure in the world at the time of completion in 1889. The Jewish community eventually ran out of funding and the building was sold to the city of Turin. The tower has been Turin's landmark ever since and appears on the Italian two-cent euro coin. Today it houses the Museo Nazionale del Cinema, Italy's first national cinema museum, an extraordinarily creative institution that traces the history of moving image from pre-cinema optical toys through the golden age of Hollywood, Italian neorealism, and digital cinema. A transparent panoramic lift glides up through the interior of the dome to the observation platform at 85 metres, offering one of the most dramatic city views in Italy.
Did you know? The Mole Antonelliana appears on the Italian two-cent euro coin, making it the official symbol of Italian national identity on everyday currency.
