About Castello Saraceno

The ruined Arab-Byzantine castle crowning the summit of Monte Tauro above Taormina, offering the highest and most panoramic views of the Ionian coast and Etna.

The Castello Saraceno, also called Castello di Taormina or Castello della Mola, stands on the summit of Monte Tauro, the rocky peak that rises directly above Taormina to a height of about 400 metres. The castle was built by the Byzantine Greeks in the early medieval period and subsequently modified by the Arabs who controlled this part of Sicily from the 9th century; the name 'Saraceno' reflects the Arab period of occupation. It was finally captured by the Normans in 1079. Today the castle is a ruin, but a walk of about 30 minutes from the upper part of Taormina brings you to the summit, where the views, 360 degrees of coastline, mountains, sea, and Etna, justify every step of the climb.

Did you know? The summit of Monte Tauro at about 400m is one of the finest natural lookout points in Sicily, on very clear days the view stretches from Etna and the Alcantara valley in the south-west to the Calabrian mountains across the strait to the north.
