About Fontane Bianche Beach

The finest sandy beach near Syracuse, 15 kilometres south of the city, a long arc of white sand with calm, shallow turquoise waters ideal for swimming, backed by low dunes and pine trees.

Fontane Bianche, White Fountains, takes its name from freshwater springs that once emerged from the sandy floor near the shore, mixing fresh and salt water in a phenomenon similar to the Fountain of Arethusa in the city. Today the springs are less visible, but the beach retains all the qualities that have made it the most popular summer destination for Syracusans for generations. The beach is a long arc of fine white sand, gently sloping into the sea, with water that is clear and turquoise in colour and calm enough for children. Behind the beach, low dunes and Mediterranean pine trees provide shade. The water quality is generally very good, and the beach is serviced by lidos, restaurants, and beach clubs throughout the summer season.

Did you know? The 'white fountains' that give the beach its name were freshwater springs emerging from the sea floor just offshore, a phenomenon caused by the same underground aquifer system that feeds the Fountain of Arethusa in the city of Syracuse, meaning fresh water has been bubbling up from beneath the Sicilian bedrock at multiple points along this coast for millennia.
