About Barrage Vauban
A 17th-century fortified dam by Vauban offering the finest rooftop panorama over La Petite France and the Ponts Couverts.
The Barrage Vauban is a remarkable piece of military engineering built between 1686 and 1690 by Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, the genius military architect who redesigned France's fortification system for Louis XIV. The barrage is not primarily a dam in the modern sense but a fortified weir: a long arched gallery built across the River Ill that could be used to flood the surrounding terrain in times of siege, drowning the approaches to the city and making them impassable to an enemy army. The structure consists of a series of arches on which galleries and chambers were built, the whole topped with a broad walkable terrace. Thirteen large paintings depicting the history of Strasbourg, commissioned by Napoleon, are preserved within the vaulted gallery. But the real reason visitors come today is the rooftop terrace: it is entirely free to access, and it offers the most celebrated viewpoint in Strasbourg, a sweeping panorama over the Ponts Couverts, La Petite France, and the cathedral spire rising above the rooftops on the horizon.
Did you know? Vauban's flood-defence concept was revolutionary: by closing the weir gates, the defenders could flood the terrain around the city to a depth of several metres, making cavalry and infantry advance impossible.
