About Villa Comunale
A clifftop public garden with the most spectacular free view in Sorrento, looking across the Bay of Naples to Vesuvius, with the cliffs dropping sheer below you to the sea.
The Villa Comunale is Sorrento's main clifftop public garden, situated at the western edge of the historic centre between the church of San Francesco and the cliff edge above Marina Piccola. The garden occupies the top of the 30-metre cliff that drops sheer to the sea below, and the views from its terraces are among the finest in the Bay of Naples. Looking north and east, you see the full sweep of the bay: Vesuvius rising from the plain to the northeast, the curve of the coast towards Naples, the islands of Capri to the south and Ischia to the northwest. The garden itself is modestly planted with Mediterranean species, palms, bougainvillea, lemon trees, roses, and has benches and terraces positioned to take maximum advantage of the views. It opens at no charge and is used by Sorrentines of all ages for their evening passeggiata. The adjacent belvedere terrace offers what is arguably the best single viewpoint in Sorrento, the spot where generations of artists, writers, and travellers have stood and attempted to capture the scene before them.
Did you know? The German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe visited Sorrento in 1787 during his famous Italian Journey and described the view from the clifftop over the Bay of Naples as "one of the most beautiful in the world", a view that you can still have today from the Villa Comunale.
