About Chalet and Garden of the Countess of Edla
A romantic Swiss-style chalet built by King Ferdinand II for his morganatic wife the Countess of Edla, its exterior clad in cork-bark panels, set in a garden within the Pena Park, a hidden gem of Victorian-era eccentricity.
The Chalet and Garden of the Countess of Edla is one of the most charming and unusual buildings in the Pena Park, a romantic retreat built by King Ferdinand II of Portugal for his second wife, the actress and opera singer Elisa Hensler, who was created Countess of Edla in a morganatic marriage in 1869. The chalet was built between 1864 and 1869 in a Swiss vernacular style, decorated externally with hand-carved cork-bark panels depicting scenes from nature, an extraordinary and unique decorative technique. The interior rooms are intimate and charming, with original wallpapers, furniture, and decorative objects. The surrounding garden has been recently restored and features a collection of exotic trees, woodland paths, and a small lake. The complex is located within the Pena Park and is accessed on foot from the Pena Palace ticketing area.
