About Oratorio di San Bernardino

Adjacent to the Basilica di San Francesco, the small two-story Oratorio di San Bernardino contains one of the finest concentrations of early 16th-century Sienese fresco painting, works by Sodoma, Beccafumi, and Girolamo del Pacchia in an intimate chapel space.

The Oratorio di San Bernardino is a small two-story oratory in the square of San Francesco, built on the spot where St Bernardino of Siena (1380–1444), the great Franciscan preacher, used to preach to the crowds in the early fifteenth century. It was constructed between 1460 and 1493 as a memorial to the saint, who was canonized in 1450.

The upper oratory (the Oratorio superiore) contains a remarkable fresco cycle painted between 1496 and 1518 by three of the leading Sienese painters of the early sixteenth century: Giovanni Antonio Bazzi (Sodoma), Domenico Beccafumi, and Girolamo del Pacchia. The frescoes depict scenes from the Life of the Virgin, and they represent a microcosm of early sixteenth-century Sienese painting, showing how each of these very different artists responded to the challenge of the same narrative subject. Sodoma's contribution, with its characteristic blend of grace and emotional intensity, contrasts with Beccafumi's more restless, experimental approach and del Pacchia's more Florentine-influenced clarity.

Did you know? St Bernardino of Siena, in whose honour the oratory was built, invented the modern Catholic devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, he introduced the practice of displaying the letters IHS (the first three letters of 'Jesus' in Greek) in a radiating sun symbol, which he displayed during his sermons and which became one of the most widely recognised symbols of Catholicism.
