About Triana
The vibrant neighbourhood across the Guadalquivir, birthplace of Sevillian flamenco, home of the city's finest ceramic tile tradition, and site of the former Spanish Inquisition headquarters.
Triana is Seville's most characterful neighbourhood, separated from the historic centre by the Guadalquivir River and connected by the ornate Isabel II Bridge. Long the home of Seville's working-class gitano community, Triana is considered the cradle of Sevillian flamenco, some of the most celebrated flamenco artists of the 20th century, including La Niña de los Peines and Naranjito de Triana, were born here. The neighbourhood is also famous for its ceramic tile tradition, and several workshops still produce the distinctive Triana azulejos used in buildings throughout Seville and exported worldwide. The Castillo de San Jorge, once headquarters of the Spanish Inquisition in Seville, now houses a museum telling the story of its grim history. The riverside Calle Betis offers some of the best views of the Seville skyline.
Did you know? The Spanish Inquisition held its Seville headquarters in Triana's Castillo de San Jorge for nearly three centuries, making this neighbourhood the site of one of Spain's most notorious centres of religious persecution.
