About Basílica de la Macarena
Home of the Virgen de la Macarena, the most revered religious image in Seville, with golden tear-streaks and an emerald-encrusted robe, patron of bullfighters and the heart of Holy Week emotion.
The Basílica de la Macarena is the most emotionally charged religious site in Seville, home to the Virgen de la Macarena, the 17th-century polychrome wooden sculpture that is the most beloved and revered religious image in all of Seville and perhaps in all of Andalusia. The Virgin's exquisitely painted face, with its famous gold-leaf tears (added by a devotee in the 18th century), and her magnificent robe embroidered with gold thread and studded with emeralds gifted by a devoted bullfighter, are objects of intense veneration. The basilica itself was built in 1949 to replace an earlier chapel and is adjacent to one of the few surviving sections of Seville's original 14th-century city wall. The attached museum contains the Virgin's Holy Week paso (float) and a remarkable collection of golden ceremonial objects.
Did you know? The Virgen de la Macarena is the patron saint of bullfighters, and the most famous matadors of the 20th century, including Manolete and El Cordobés, dedicated their performances to her and gave her jewels as gifts.
