The gardens of the Real Alcázar are among the most historically significant and aesthetically beautiful historic gardens in Spain. Extending over 11 hectares behind the palace buildings, the gardens developed over many centuries from the Islamic pleasure gardens of the Moorish Alcázar through successive additions by Christian monarchs. The gardens are organised as a sequence of enclosed garden rooms, each with its own character: the Moorish-style garden near the palace walls, with geometric parterres, orange trees, and the ancient Mercury Pool with its bronze statue; the English Garden, created in the 19th century with more naturalistic planting; the Galería del Grutesco, an extraordinary raised gallery built into the former city wall and encrusted with sea shells, stones, and grotesque masks; and various garden pavilions and small pools.
