About La Concha & Miramar Palace Views

The headland between La Concha and Ondarreta beaches, the western anchor of the bay where the Miramar Palace gardens offer the finest close-up views of La Concha, with the Isla Santa Clara and the bay in perfect composition.

The headland between La Concha and Ondarreta beaches is one of the finest viewpoints in San Sebastián, a rocky promontory where the Miramar Palace gardens reach the cliff edge, giving views directly along La Concha beach towards Monte Urgull, with the Isla Santa Clara floating in the middle of the bay. This viewpoint offers a different perspective from Monte Igueldo (which shows the whole bay from above) and from the Paseo de la Concha (which shows it at sea level): from the Miramar headland, you see the beach at close range, the promenade below, the city behind the beach, and the sea extending to the horizon. The Ondarreta beach, on the western side of the headland, slightly more sheltered, is less famous than La Concha but equally beautiful, and at the far western end of Ondarreta is the Peine del Viento (Wind Comb), the famous sculpture by Eduardo Chillida: three steel arcs attached to the rocks where the sea breaks, one of the most celebrated public sculptures in Spain.

Did you know? Eduardo Chillida was offered the commission for the Peine del Viento in the 1960s, but spent over a decade finding the exact location for the sculpture before settling on the western end of Ondarreta. He walked the entire San Sebastián coastline many times before deciding that the specific rock formations and their relationship to the Atlantic made this the only possible site.
