About Trastevere
Rome's most atmospheric medieval neighbourhood, with cobbled alleys, vine-covered restaurants, and the ancient Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere.
Trastevere, literally "across the Tiber" (trans Tiberim), is Rome's most authentically preserved pre-modern neighbourhood. Clustered on the right bank of the Tiber, its medieval street pattern of narrow alleys, hidden piazzas, and ivy-covered walls has survived essentially intact, making it one of the most atmospheric places in Italy.
The neighbourhood has a distinct identity: historically home to Rome's working class and immigrant communities (particularly Syrian and Jewish), it has maintained a fiercely independent character. The Trasteverini, locals, long prided themselves on being the truest Romans of all.
Its greatest monument is the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, one of the oldest churches in Rome (possibly the first official church to hold Mass publicly). Its golden 12th-century apse mosaics, visible from the piazza outside even at night, are among the most beautiful in Rome. The neighbourhood's evenings are extraordinarily lively, restaurants, wine bars, and trattorias line every street.
Did you know? The Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere may be the first church in Rome to have held Mass publicly, built on the site where a miraculous spring of oil reportedly gushed up on the day Christ was born.
