About Basilica di Santa Cecilia in Trastevere

The church of the patron saint of music, built over the house where Cecilia was martyred in the 2nd century AD, containing Pietro Cavallini's remarkable Byzantine-influenced fresco and Stefano Maderno's sculptural masterpiece.

The Basilica di Santa Cecilia in Trastevere is one of the most emotionally resonant churches in Rome, built on the site of the house where the aristocratic Roman martyr Cecilia was killed for her Christian faith in the late 2nd or early 3rd century AD. She is venerated as the patron saint of music.

According to her legend, Cecilia sang to God in her heart during her wedding, 'cantantibus organis' (while the instruments were playing), giving rise to her patronage of music. When Roman authorities tried to kill her by sealing her in the hot room of her own bath house, she survived three days. A soldier was sent to behead her, and struck three times but failed to sever her head. She lived for three more days, gave away her estate to the poor, and died.

The church's greatest treasure is Stefano Maderno's marble sculpture (1600), showing Cecilia's body as it was reportedly found when her tomb was opened in 1599, lying on her side, her head turned away, three cuts visible on her neck. The sculpture is tender, heartbreaking, and strangely modern. Pietro Cavallini's fragmentary Last Judgment fresco (c. 1293), in the nuns' choir above the nave, is one of the greatest surviving examples of late medieval Italian painting.

Did you know? Santa Cecilia is venerated as the patron saint of music worldwide because she 'sang to God in her heart' on her wedding night while the instruments played, this image inspired a tradition of music at Catholic worship.
