About Piazza del Popolo

Rome's grandest entrance piazza, once the city's northern gateway, with twin Baroque churches, an Egyptian obelisk, and the Pincio terrace overlooking the whole historic centre.

Piazza del Popolo was Rome's primary northern entrance for centuries, the point at which the Via Flaminia, the ancient road from the north, passed through the Aurelian Wall and entered the city. Generations of pilgrims, travellers, and dignitaries first saw Rome from this piazza.

The current design is largely the work of architect Giuseppe Valadier, who redesigned it in its current neoclassical oval form between 1811 and 1823. The piazza's central feature is an Egyptian obelisk from the Circus Maximus, originally brought to Rome by Augustus from Heliopolis; at 24 metres it is Rome's third-tallest obelisk.

The south side is closed by a pair of identical Baroque churches, Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria in Montesanto, creating the theatrical illusion of a perfect mirror pair, though they are subtly different on close inspection. They frame the three roads leading south into Rome's historic centre: the Via del Corso, Via del Babuino, and Via della Ripetta.

Did you know? The twin churches that appear identical are actually different shapes, one is circular, one oval, because the land plots available on each side were different sizes.
