About Piazza del Campidoglio

Michelangelo's finest civic design, a trapezoidal hilltop piazza with a star-pattern pavement, flanked by two museums, crowning the Capitoline Hill with Renaissance geometry.

The Piazza del Campidoglio is widely considered Michelangelo's masterpiece of civic design. Commissioned by Pope Paul III in 1536 following the humiliation of Charles V's 1527 sack of Rome, the project was intended to restore Rome's dignity before a visit by Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Michelangelo was 60 years old when he designed the piazza; he did not live to see it completed (construction continued until 1654).

The design addresses a fundamental challenge: the Capitoline Hill's two summits face in opposite directions from the city. Michelangelo reoriented the piazza to face Rome rather than the Forum, drawing visitors up from the city below via the Cordonata, a broad ramp-staircase designed to allow senators to ride horses up on horseback. The famous star-pattern pavement (actually oval rather than circular) was not completed until the 1940s based on Michelangelo's original drawing.

A copy of the Marcus Aurelius equestrian statue stands at the centre; the original is in the Capitoline Museums. At the top of the Cordonata stand the Dioscuri, Castor and Pollux, ancient statues found in the Ghetto.

Did you know? Michelangelo designed the Campidoglio at age 60 and never saw it completed, construction continued for 118 years after his death in 1564.
