About Gordes

Regularly voted "one of the most beautiful villages in France," Gordes perches on a dramatic limestone cliff in the Luberon with its medieval château, dry-stone Village des Bories, and lavender festival.

Gordes is one of the most celebrated villages in Provence, perched dramatically on a rocky bluff above the Imergue Valley in the northern Luberon. The village has been listed among "Les Plus Beaux Villages de France" (The Most Beautiful Villages of France) and attracts over a million visitors per year. Its medieval château, now housing the Vasarely Foundation, overlooks a cascade of ancient stone houses that tumble down the cliffside. Nearby is the Village des Bories, a remarkable collection of 20 dry-stone huts (bories) that were used by shepherds and farmers from the Bronze Age through the early 20th century. In June and July, the lavender fields of the Plateau de Valensole, visible from Gordes, create the classic purple-and-gold Provençal landscape.

Did you know? The dry-stone bories of the Luberon use no mortar whatsoever, the overlapping stone slabs are fitted so precisely that they create a naturally waterproof structure; some bories have remained structurally sound for over 500 years without any repair.
